Graph Search, a precise search feature, is being rolled out
across North America to hundreds of millions of Facebook users.
The move comes following six months of user testing open to a
select number of people. Now all users who use the site in US English will have
access to the feature, which may take several weeks.
Graph Search is designed to let users search for specific
information about Facebook connections, for example, "My friends who like
cats" or "Doctors who watch Game of Thrones".
The feature searches content users have shared, including
pictures, personal information and links.
At the search's January launch, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was
keen to itterate the differences between it and a web search.
Web search is designed to take any open-ended query and give you
links that might have answers. Graph Search is designed to take a precise query
and give you an answer, rather than links that might provide an answer,” he
said.
The company outlined that information marked as private would
still only be available to view by those premitted to.
The new function will also allow more precise advertising to
users based on their searches and results.
A mobile version is expected to be released shortly.
Around 1.1 billion people use Facebook globally, with 195
million monthly active users in the US and Canada alone.
