The company
is planning to bring out lenses with built-in sensors, Bionz processors,
Wi-Fi/NFC wireless connections and SD card slots, according to the site
SonyAlphaRumours.com.
The website
published pictures of the devices, showing new DSC-QX10 and DCS-QX100 lenses
attached to smartphones to turn them into higher-quality cameras.
The lenses
can be magnetically attached to either iOS or Android phones, according to the
site.
The rumoured
devices will have no controls or screens, so users would have to zoom, focus
and operate the lens through their phone screens.
One of the
devices is thought to be similar to the lens of Sony’s RX100MII, which features
a one-inch, 20.2MP sensor.
The other would be like the lens currently on the Sony WX150,
which comes with a 10 x optical zoom, high-speed auto-focus and 18MP sensor.
Sony has yet to confirm the new products and has given no
indication as to price or launch date, but the website suggested the release
could be some time in early September.
Several third-party manufacturers – such as Mophie and Olloclip
– have already produced similar devices, but Sony would be the first major
manufacturer to do so.
The lenses would be the latest in a number of innovations from
the Japanese company, including the Sony Zperia Z, a smartphone that can
operate underwater for up to 30 minutes.
The device, unveiled last month, comes with a resolution of 443
pixels per inch and allows users to continue shooting photos or video under
water.
