The latest game in Rockstar's 16-year-old GTA franchise was
availabe from midnight on Monday amid much anticipation.
Within 24 hours it had generated £496m of sales, smashing the
previous first-day record set last November by Call Of Duty: Black Ops II,
which made £310m.
Some experts have predicted GTA 5 could go on to become the
world's best selling game and generate more than £1 billion in first year
sales.
Strauss Zelnick, chief executive of distributor Take-Two
Interactive, which owns Rockstar, said: "Once again, the team at Rockstar
Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry's new
standard for creativity, innovation and excellence."
He added: "Beginning at midnight on Monday, consumers
around the world gathered in anticipation to be among the first to experience
the evolution of this remarkable series.
"In North America alone, more than 8,300 stores opened
their doors at midnight to welcome fans."
The early commercial success matches the unanimous praise GTA 5
has received from the critics, with five-star reviews being given out across
the board.
Keza MacDonald, games editor at IGN.com, called GTA 5
"preposterously enjoyable" and concluded that it is "one of the
very best video games ever made".
Tom Bramwell of Eurogamer praised the game's satirical humour
and said "you can't go half a block without walking into a punch
line."
Other reviewers said the detail of the city gamers inhabit
called Los Santos was astounding and new features such as the ability to change
character during missions was impressive.
