Barely a fortnight has passed since Samsung
launched its much-hyped Galaxy Gear smartwatch, yet already there are rumours
of another model in the pipeline.
Korean news site Daum has
reported that a second version of the watch could come out as early January
2014.
According to insider sources cited by the
website, Samsung has already started on development after the Galaxy Gear was
greeted with a lukewarm response. The first iteration of Samsung's smartwatch
was revealed earlier this month at the IFA electronics fair in Berlin amid much
excitement.
It has a colour screen and can make voice
calls and run apps as well as notifying users of texts and emails.
Samsung hailed the smarwatch as a
"fashion icon" and hopes it will usher in a new trend when it goes on
sale on September 25.
At the launch Samsung’s chief executive JK
Shinsaid said: “Consumers want their daily lives to be easier and more
enjoyable.
"Samsung Galaxy Gear benefits
consumers by integrating smart device technology even deeper into their
everyday lives, and bridges the gap between the mobile device and fashion
worlds to create truly wearable technology."
However, despite this optimism, Samsung has
come in for criticism over the decision to make the Galaxy Gear compatible only
with Galaxy Android devices.
Making the watch more compatible is likely
to be one of the improvements incorporated in the Galaxy Gear 2.
Samsung is the world's bestselling
smartphone maker and beat a number of rivals to unveil the device, with some
predicting demand for the gadget set to soar.
As many as five million smartwatches could
be sold in 2014 according to Tech consultancy Canalys.
Reports that Samsung are looking to rush
out a second version of the smartwatch could reflect the potential the company
sees in the market.
